Teacher Training at The Open School

The Open School conducts regular short term courses to train teachers, parents and students to handle children with Learning Disabilities.

  • Workshops are conducted in mainstream schools to help identify students with Learning Disabilities and counsel parents on sending the children for remedial teaching.
  • Students of Psychology from colleges can apply for short term internships to help understand the needs of Children with Special Needs. They observe the classes and are assigned students to do a case study and plan out an Individualised Education Programme for them.
  • The Open School conducts short term certificate course’s (including both theory and practical) on Learning Disabilities at Colleges. Currently we are conducting the course at Hindustan College of Arts and Science, Chennai.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy (OT) is an allied health service provided by occupational therapists who often work closely with other professionals like Physiotherapists, Speech Therapists, Audiologists, social workers, medicine and assistive technology practitioners.

OT deals with gross and fine motor skills, visual-perception, muscle strength, cognitive skills, activities to cope with daily living and sensory-processing deficits through a sensory integration (SI) approach. SI makes the child feel sensory experiences that include touch, movement, body awareness, sight, sound, smell and taste. The ultimate goal of OT is to bring the child from an over sensitive/under reactive state through sensory stimulation.

Activity level whether high/low, coordination problems, poor organisational skills, poor self-concept , delay in speech, language, motor skills or academic achievements are worked upon in an active, meaningful and fun way so that the child behaves in a more functional manner in all the everyday activities.

OT intervention for ASD and SLD is an on-going process (the child will always need sensory inputs throughout their life), hence parents are also involved. The parents work with the therapists to learn more about their child’s sensory challenges and how to overcome them through various techniques and therapeutic devices. This is called a ‘sensory diet’. The child’s therapist will provide ideas to teachers and others outside the family who interact regularly with the child.

Speech Therapy

At Sankalp, Speech therapy is not restricted to the therapy room. We work on generalising the skills taught during individual/group therapy session in the classroom and other specific environment in the school. Parents are an integral part of the therapy sessions enabling them to work on the same goals at home.

Speech therapy helps

  • In increasing spontaneous communication
  • To improve peer interactions
  • To improve social skills that may allow them to play with others and follow directions
  • To increase understanding of words which will allow them to ask for help, ask and answer questions, take turns in conversation and start or stop a conversation
  • To improve clarity in speech
  • In feeding children having chewing and swallowing problems.

Applied Behaviour Analysis

Very few special schools in India provide ABA services. We are extremely happy to offer this as a part of our Speech Therapy Programme.

ABA is an Evidence Based Approach aimed at increasing socially appropriate behaviour, improving social interaction and facilitating learning. ABA is based on the concept that behaviour is acquired through interactions with the environment and that changing the events in the environment can positively shape or influence the behaviour. It is individualised for each child focusing on the areas of learning specific to that child.

Our Motto Is “To Break The Communication Barrier”.

Physiotherapy

The physiotherapy program at Sankalp is customised for a child or young adult with special needs to meet the physical needs of the student, so as to alleviate his or her physiological complaints thereby improving the overall quality of life.

Physiotherapy helps in assessing and managing children and young adults suffering from movement disorders and physical disabilities. By providing physical intervention, advice and support, a physiotherapist helps children & young adults with special needs to achieve their full potential. Physiotherapists employ a variety of techniques including massage manipulation, cardio vascular and strengthening exercises

Remedial Teaching

The Open School and The Learning Centre offer After School Remedial Teaching for students from mainstream schools. Remedial teaching consists of intervention programmes designed to meet the specific needs of a child. The teachers focus on the learning outcomes of the child. They teach on a one-to-one basis focusing on overcoming learning difficulties in reading, comprehension, writing and spelling using different strategies. The remedial teachers understand the strengths and weaknesses of a child and adopt appropriate teaching strategies to help the students improve their overall performance.

Instrument Enrichment Programme (IE)

The IE Programme is a unique educational technique of mediated learning developed by world-renowned psychologist Reuven Feuerstein. It is a process-based approach, focusing on developing the vitally important – and often overlooked – skill of learning how to learn & thinking about thinking, subsequently tapping into an individual’s latent intellectual capabilities. Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment (FIE) is a cognitive intervention program consisting of specially designed instruments, FIE is a series of pencil-and-paper tasks that may be mediated in a classroom, group or individual setting.

Each series focuses on a different cognitive skill, creating systematic, persistent and structured conditions to engage learners in problem-solving by developing their ability to understand and elaborate information.
